TESTING
Testing criteria is segmented into 4 main categories:

Air Resistance (Factor A)  - The air tightness test measures the volume of air that would pass through a closed window at an air pressure differential that represents a wind speed of 40 kph. Performance indicated by a number rating from A1 to A3. The higher the number, the more airtight the product

Water Resistance (Factor B) - Water tightness testing involves applying a uniform water spray at increasing air pressure until water penetrates the window. Performance is indicated by a number ranging from B1 to B7 and B1 to B4 for sliding doors, The higher the number, the more watertight the product.

Wind-Load Resistance (Factor C) – Resistance to wind-load is a measure of the products structural strength and is tested by applying increasing levels of air pressure to simulate the wind force. Air pressure is applied until the products operation is impaired. There are up to five levels of wind resistance for windows (C1 to C5) and three levels for sliding doors (C1 to C3). The higher the number, the better the performance.

Forced Entry Resistance (Factor F) – The standards for windows include a test to indicate how well the product may resist entry within five minutes. One of two ratings is assigned, F1 or F2. For windows, F1 means the product has a lock, while F2 indicates it has a lock and it passes hand and tool manipulation tests. This test is optional for windows that are installed higher than two meters from the ground. F2 represents the higher level of security.

Screen Strength (Factor S) – Insect screens are not intended to serve any purpose other than to keep insects out. They are tested for tear, damage and retention in windows when subjected to loads. One of two ratings is assigned, S1 or S2. A rating of S2 is stronger than S1.

ENERGYSTAR Ratings and related definitions:

U-VALUE  - Rates how much heat is conducted through the combination of materials, which means how much heat the component allows to pass through it. The lower the U-Value the better the energy efficiency. The U-Value is based on a scale of 0 to 1. An U-Value of 0.32 would be better than 0.40

R-VALUE  - R-Value is used to rate how well a material resists the flow of heat through it. The higher an R-Value is, the more heat loss it resists and therefore the more energy efficient the window is. An R-Value of R-10 would be better than R-8.
               
SOLAR HEAT GAIN COEFFICIENT  (SHGC) -SHGC measures a windows ability to reduce heat gain by blocking the heat producing rays. It is based on a scale of 0 to 1. A high coefficient will allow more sunlight and warmth into the house. A low coefficient will block more sunlight to reduce summer heat gain.    

ENERGY RATING (ER) - ER is a unitless value derived from a formula that balances heat loss (U-Factor), air leakage loss and passive solar gain of a fenestration product. The ER is applied to fenestration systems intended to be installed in  vertical orientation in low-rise residential buildings.

ENERGY STAR ZONES  -The four climate zones were developed using heating degree-days, a measure of annual average temperature. The efficiency levels measure how well a window, door or skylight insulates against the cold or how well it uses the suns heat to supplement the homes heating system. Because the climate becomes progressively colder from Zone A to Zone D, the levels are more stringent for each successive zone.
